After dozens of trips, we’ve figured out what actually deserves space in our travel coffee kit. The exact setup changes a little depending on whether we’re flying, staying in a hotel, or building a camping coffee kit, but the basic goal is the same: a portable coffee kit that makes genuinely good coffee without taking over the suitcase.
Travel coffee kit vs. camping coffee kit: What changes?
For hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs/VRBOs
If we’re staying in a hotel or short term rental, we keep the travel coffee kit pretty simple. We usually bring the AeroPress Go, a hand grinder, whole beans, and a travel mug, then rely on whatever kettle, microwave, or hot-water setup is already there.
For camping
Car camping gives us a little more room to work with, so this is where the full camping coffee kit comes out. We’ll usually (still) pack our trusty AeroPress Go and hand grinder, but we’ll add the Coleman Grill (+ lighter + propane + stovetop pot) or Jetboil (+ lighter + propane), delicious coffee beans, and an insulated mug.
If we’re backpacking in the wilderness, we’re sometimes perfectly happy to bring good instant coffee and call it a day. But if our pack allows, you can believe we’re bringing the same set up as our car camping outfit outlined above.

1. A portable grinder
Portable grinders are the unsung heroes of the travel coffee kit. They transform whole beans into the freshest possible grounds for optimal flavor. Here’s a photo of our Oxo grinder, but the best portable coffee grinder we’ve found is the JavaPresse Manual Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder.
It’s a pint-sized powerhouse that keeps our coffee vibrant and aromatic, no matter how far from home we roam. It gets the job done.

2. Your portable coffee brewer of choice
Some travelers opt to find a travel pour over coffee system. We’ve been happy with the AeroPress Go Travel Coffee Maker & Stainless Steel Filter Bundle. (Read our deep dive into the AeroPress Original vs. Go vs. Go Plus).
The AeroPress Go is a compact and ingenious travel coffee maker. We like it for its ability to produce smooth, rich coffee—and even espresso—with minimal fuss. It’s durable, comes with a reusable filter (so you can save space and paper), and includes a coffee mug. This is as close to an all-in-one solution on the market that you can find.
It’s lightweight and folds into a single compact unit. That means it takes up very little room in our pack.
3. A way to make hot water
For travelers heading to Airbnbs, VRBOs, hostels, hotels, or your Aunt Sally’s, you probably will have access to a kettle or microwave to make hot water. If you’re not confident in your hot water access, add a hot water maker to your coffee travel kit.
You could travel with your Stagg kettle, but we recommend the Jetboil, which is known for its incredibly fast boil time. In just a minute or two, you can have boiling water ready for your coffee. They’re designed to be compact and easily packed, making them ideal for travel, and come with integrated fuel canisters that nest together for convenient storage.
Just note that if you add this to your pack, you may need to purchase back up fuel canisters and have matches or a lighter handy.
4. A vessel to drink from
Whether or not you need a coffee mug in your travel coffee kit depends on your specific setup and preferences, but it’s generally a very good idea and often considered essential.
We have a pair of spill-proof, double insulated travel coffee mugs that may as well have their own passport. They go everywhere with us.
The best coffee portable mugs we’ve found are from Hydroflask, which we turn to often for their durability and ability to keep coffee hot.
5. Something to store it all in
Different travelers will have different preferences for how they keep their travel coffee kit ready to go in between adventures. We’ve found that a waterproof dry sack with a fold down closure—like this one from Osprey—keeps our equipment in safe enough condition.
We prefer the soft, packable nature of a dry sack over bulkier containers, as it allows for flexible storage in backpacks or luggage.

6. Your coffee beans!
Perhaps the most crucial of ingredients for a successful travel coffee kit, be sure to add in some beans. Some of our favorite coffee roasters that ship nationally can be found in our guide on “How to make black coffee taste good.”
What about a coffee scale?
We don’t currently have a coffee scale in our kit, and tend to “eyeball” it instead. The wonderful thing about AeroPress coffee is that it’s very forgiving. Our go-to strategy is to start with a concentrated brew (using plenty of beans) and then dilute it with water until it reaches our preferred strength.
Or a travel pour-over coffee kit?
If you’re committed to pour over coffee while out and about, you can absolutely build a lightweight travel pour-over coffee kit with a collapsible dripper, paper filters, hand grinder, and mug. For this setup, we’ve found the silicon Hario Zebrang to be a real star, though we’ve also been satisfied with the OXO Collapsible Pour Over (we tend to be big fans of both Hario and OXO coffee gear alike).
We usually prefer the AeroPress Go for simplicity’s sake, but figuring out a travel pour over coffee kit makes sense if that’s the brew method you actually enjoy most.

What is the best reusable travel coffee cup?
For us, the gold standard is a cup that can take a beating in a backpack, keep coffee hot for hours, and—most importantly—not leak all over your gear. Hydro Flask’s travel mugs consistently win our loyalty. They’re double-walled, vacuum-insulated, and built to survive airport security bins, backcountry trails, and the bottom of your tote bag.
Bonus: they come in sizes that fit under most portable brewers, so you can brew straight into them.
What is the best coffee brewing method for travel?
If you want one brewer to rule them all, the AeroPress Go is hard to beat. It makes smooth, rich coffee (and even faux espresso) with minimal fuss, packs into its own travel mug, and is durable. If you prefer a pour-over, try the collapsible stainless steel or silicone drippers—they’re feather-light and take up about as much space as a bandana.
We recently tested the AeroPress Go Plus and while it had some notable upgrades, we think the AeroPress Go is a better fit for camping. Travelers who prefer vacation rentals and like to have a portable (albeit not spill proof) coffee mug should opt for the Plus product.
What is the best portable coffee setup?
Our dream setup balances great flavor with minimal bulk. For us, that’s the AeroPress Go paired with a small hand grinder (like the JavaPresse) and a sturdy travel mug. Toss in a Jetboil or compact kettle if you’re not sure about hot water access, and you’ve got a complete kit that fits in a daypack. It’s lightweight, easy to clean, and adaptable enough for hotel rooms, campsites, and everything in between.
