When you start shopping for a home drip brewer, the Bonavita 8-Cup Coffee Maker, also called the Bonavita Connoisseur usually pops up right alongside big names like Moccamaster and OXO. It’s Specialty Coffee Association (SCA)-certified, brews hot, and promises excellent coffee at a much friendlier price point than its competitors.
For a long time, it’s been the go-to “budget-friendly” option for anyone who wants reliable drip coffee and even extraction without extra fuss.
If you have a modest coffee maker budget but crave high-end results, you already know that many machines under $200 can’t reach the optimal brewing temperature for a smooth, flavorful cup.
The Bonavita coffee maker aims to upend that norm. But does it actually hold up? The TL;DR of this Bonavita coffee review is: It sure does. In fact, I haven’t had a better cup from an automated coffee machine.
After plenty of mornings using our Bonavita coffee brewer, here’s the low-key, honest rundown.
About the Bonavita 8 Cup Coffee Maker

The Bonavita 8-Cup Coffee Maker is a straightforward, SCA-certified* drip coffee machine designed for coffee lovers who want consistent, high-quality brews without fuss. It features a one-touch brew operation, a stainless steel thermal carafe, and a heater that maintains the ideal brewing temperature of 195-205°F.
Optional pre-infusion on the Bonavita “BV1900TS” allows freshly roasted coffee to bloom before full extraction, while the flat-bottomed filter basket and large shower head promote even saturation for smooth, balanced coffee.
Features that we like include:
- One-touch brewing with auto shut-off
- Dishwasher-safe carafe lid, filter basket, and showerhead
- Stainless steel double-walled thermal carafe keeps coffee hot without a warming plate
- BPA-free components
It’ll cost you $190, making it a great gift for coffee snobs for the holidays or even as a wedding gift (that’s when we got ours, thanks Aunt Sue!).

* Being SCA-certified means the coffee maker meets the Specialty Coffee Association’s strict standards for brewing temperature, extraction time, and overall quality. It’s more or less a seal of quality that guarantees your coffee tastes closer to what a professional barista would achieve.
The good stuff: Why we like the Bonavita 8C in our kitchen
1. It brews a legitimately good cup
Bonavita’s claim to fame is simple: water at the right temperature, evenly distributed over the grounds, and a flat-bottom basket that encourages consistent extraction. Even now, when the machine is new and clean, the coffee quality is hard to argue with.
Should you care about extraction, as someone who is not a coffee scientist or a massive nerd? Basically, yes. The reason is predictability. Coffee doesn’t give up all its flavors at once — the bright, acidic stuff tends to dissolve first, followed by the sweeter flavors, and then the heavier, more bitter compounds. A consistent extraction helps you land somewhere in the happy middle: a cup you can actually make again, rather than one that’s unpleasantly sour one mug and bitter the next.

You’re getting 195–205°F brewing temp, a wide showerhead for even saturation, a pre-infusion option and a stainless thermal carafe — no hot plate to bake the coffee.
The wide, well-designed sprayhead spreads water evenly over the grounds at around 195-200°F (per my digital thermometer), and the coffee that comes out is noticeably hotter and more flavorful than anything I’ve brewed before (better than my thermal cone carafe, ceramic pour-over, French Press, or AeroPress).
The coffee in the Bonavita carafe never burns, which can’t be said for equivalent drip coffee machines with glass carafes (here’s look at you, Mr. Coffee). Plus, the bottom of the metal carafe is smooth and cool to the touch, so we can put it on our wood-top kitchen table without a trivet.
For everyday automatic brewing, it checks the boxes that we think are important.
2. Great for brewing for a crowd
We usually make pour over coffee for our daily two cups, but that gets a little… let’s say “involved” when more than a couple of people are around.
When we’re hosting fellow coffee nerds, we’ll pull out the 10-cup Chemex; but for a group that’s less *ahem* snobby, pushing a button and serving a big pot of decent-quality drip coffee is just easier.
The Bonavita 8 Cup really shines here. It’s fast, consistent, and hands-off.

3. It’s extremely simple to use
One button. No menus, no modes, no LCD screens that fail. That simplicity is part of its charm… and why anyone who just wants good coffee without thinking likely comes back to this product.
There’s nothing to fidget with or adjust. Just fill the clearly marked water reservoir, place the sturdy plastic basket on the metal carafe, add a filter and coffee grounds, and slide the carafe (basket on top) under the brew spout.
4. It’s one of the most affordable SCA-certified brewers
“SCA-certified brewers are automatic coffee makers that meet the Specialty Coffee Association technical standards for water temperature (195°F–205°F), brewing time, and extraction uniformity,” according to its website.
Does that automatically mean every SCA-certified machine makes incredible coffee? No. And it certainly doesn’t mean a coffee maker without the certification is bad. But it is a useful shorthand: Someone other than the manufacturer has tested the machine and confirmed that it can brew coffee within some pretty well-established parameters for good extraction.

The Bonavita coffee brewer allows you to get “high-end drip” performance for significantly less money than many competitors At about $190, it’s roughly $30 cheaper than the OXO 8-Cup and nearly half the price of a $369 Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select.
For some folks (um, hi), that alone is enough.
5. The metal carafe is dishwasher-safe
Enough said.
Where things start getting dicey
1. Carafe woes
The bottom of the carafe discolored after just a couple of uses, which looks a bit off-putting even if it doesn’t affect flavor.
But one thing we’ve noticed is that sitting around isn’t great for the brewed coffee quality. But that’s true for most drip coffee makers — the coffee tastes “old” or “stale” after an hour or so.
We’ve also found that while the carafe does a decent job keeping coffee warm, it won’t maintain a truly hot temperature beyond about 60 minutes. So if you’re someone who sips slowly or leaves coffee sitting for a while, it may feel lukewarm sooner than you’d like.
To that end, we recommend pouring it for guests as soon as it’s brewed, ideally in a double-walled glass coffee mug because they’re beautiful, impressive, and affordable.

2. The carafe lid design is a little confusing
The carafe’s lid must be fully unscrewed and removed to insert the coffee basket, which can be a bit annoying since you need to find a place to set it each time. Though, on the upside, the lid seals perfectly, and the lever-activated pour spout delivers a clean, precise pour every time.
3. Easy to forget there are grounds sitting in the brew basket
This is probably an “us” problem more than a legit downside of the Bonavita 8 Cup. But because the machine is so hands-off, it’s surprisingly easy to walk away, pour yourself a cup, and forget the spent grounds entirely (ask us how we know).
Come back later and… yikes. Not fun. :-X

- You mostly drink coffee immediately after brewing. If you like your cup fresh and hot, this machine shines. Just don’t plan on leaving it for hours; it’s meant to be enjoyed now.
- You prefer simplicity over features.

If you brew 1-2 full pots a day and drink them quickly, the Bonavita still delivers some of the best bang-for-buck coffee out there.
Who should probably skip it
- You need your thermal carafe to keep coffee pristine for hours (good luck finding this for your home setup)

- You can afford a higher-end model like the and want to leap to that class of product.
Alternatives to the Bonavita 8 cup

So, is the Bonavita 8C better than OXO or Moccamaster?
OXO Brew 8-Cup ($220)
The OXO Brew offers a few more features than the Bonavita, including a slightly more robust build and a well-designed carafe.
While it’s a bit pricier, it’s widely regarded as one of the best mid-tier drip coffee makers for people who want reliability and consistent results without breaking the bank.

Moccamaster KBGV or KBGT ($370)
The Moccamaster didn’t come to be called the “workhorse of drip machines” accidentally. It’s built like a tank, delivers consistently hot, flavorful coffee, and comes with excellent company support and service. While it carries a high price tag, it’s a durable investment that lasts for years.
One note worth clarifying: many people choose between the Bonavita 8-cup and the Moccamaster “10-cup” based on “cup count,” but both actually brew about 40 ounces of coffee. The difference is only in how the makers define a cup — Moccamaster counts a cup as 4 ounces, Bonavita as 5 ounces — so the actual yield is essentially the same.
The Bonavita has the advantage of costing less than half of a Moccamaster while delivering similar performance.

So, where can you buy a Bonavita coffee maker? The easiest place is Amazon, where it’ll run you $160 (on sale from peak price of $180). That’s about $10 cheaper than if you were to buy it directly from the Bonavita website.
Is the Bonavita Connoisseur 8-Cup One-Touch Coffee Maker dishwasher safe?
Certain parts of the Bonavita coffee maker are dishwasher-safe (top rack recommended):
- Glass carafe
- Lid of the carafe
- Filter basket
Not dishwasher safe components include the machine’s body (heating element, water reservoir, and electronics) and other permanent parts.
The TL;DR is that if it’s removable and plastic or glass, it’s usually safe for the top rack of the dishwasher. But FBOW, we feel compelled to highlight that hand washing all of the parts keeps them looking and performing their best for longer.
How to clean a Bonavita coffee maker
Cleaning a Bonavita is straightforward.
Start by rinsing the carafe, filter basket, and lid after each brew to prevent residue buildup. For deeper cleaning, mix a little warm water with mild dish soap and gently scrub with a soft sponge. Avoid anything abrasive, and don’t forget to rinse thoroughly.
For a periodic deep clean/descale of the machine itself, run a brew cycle with a 1:1 mix of water and white vinegar to remove mineral buildup. Follow it with a couple cycles of plain water to rinse out any leftover vinegar taste.
What is the best home coffee machine for home use?

If you’re looking for the best home coffee machine for home use, the Bonavita Coffee Maker is our top recommendation. It consistently brews excellent coffee at the ideal temp, has the thumbs up from the Specialty Coffee Assocation, and delivers results that rival much more expensive machines but with a simple, one-button design.
For most households, it hits the sweet spot between coffee quality, ease of use, and value.
Is Bonavita a good coffee maker? Final verdict

So, let’s get to the heart of the matter. Are Bonavita coffee makers any good? In our experience, yes. We LOVE having it in our lineup for those mornings when we get to play host (otherwise we’re sticking to our trusty Hario V60). As the Wirecutter put it, “This tiny, bare-bones brewer hides a lot of functionality under the hood.”
It shines in its simplicity: one button, a solid thermal carafe, and consistent brewing temperature. For anyone who drinks coffee soon after it’s made and doesn’t need fancy features or extended thermal performance, it’s an excellent bang-for-your-buck choice.
In short: if you want straightforward, great-tasting drip coffee without breaking the bank, the Bonavita 8-Cup delivers.
